French seams are so much easier than you’d think. 😀 Here’s a basic rundown of how I do them – all you’ll need is two strips of fabric, a sewing machine and an iron.
First, place the two pieces of fabric together so the wrong sides are facing. Sew down the edge using a 1/8 inch seam allowance, as shown below:
Open the seam up and finger press it flat, and then fold the fabric around so the right sides are facing. Stitch down the seam edge using a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
And now you’ve got a French seam! Easy, huh? The only real tricky part is making sure you’re accounting for both seams in your allowance. If the original pattern allowance is 1/4 inch, for example, bump it up to 3/4 of an inch. 😀
