Cool weather is coming up fast! Around this time every year I start craving beef stew and pot roast like crazy. Pretty much all day every day. And what better way to stop those cravings than making a huge pot of homemade beef stew?
When I make beef stew I like to keep it fairly simple. One of my favorite beef stew secrets is to use soy sauce in place of salt. It really makes it so much more savory and delicious. 😀
Another thing I always always do is salt, pepper and flour the beef. The flour and potatoes I add later help the stew to thicken naturally without adding thickeners like cornstarch.
The main way to get amazing stew: brown the meat well! The coating that forms on the bottom of the pot is called the fond and it is FULL of flavor.
I always like to add my carrots and potatoes near the end of the simmering time – this way they don’t cook to death and fall apart. 😀
